The Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) is proud to congratulate longtime member artist Zan Wells on receiving The Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. This prestigious award is bestowed by the Governor to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary lifetime service and achievement of national or statewide significance.

Zan Wells, local sculptor and cherished member of Greenville’s creative community, is well known for her creation of Mice on Main, a whimsical public art installation that has become a cultural icon and interactive treasure hunt for residents and visitors alike. Since its debut in 2000, Mice on Main has not only brought joy to thousands but also significantly benefited SmartARTS, MAC’s arts integration program that brings artists into Greenville County classrooms to enhance student learning through the arts.

Proceeds from the Mice on Main book and merchandise sales continue to support SmartARTS, fostering creativity and arts education across the region. Wells’ work exemplifies the power of public art to inspire community connection and drive educational impact.

“Zan’s generosity, vision, and dedication to the arts have left a lasting impression on our city,” said Alan Ethridge, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Arts Council. “Her support of SmartARTS through Mice on Main has helped bring arts experiences to countless students, making her an invaluable partner in our mission.”

MAC is honored to celebrate her accomplishments and contributions, and we look forward to continuing to support her legacy of creativity, education, and civic pride.
